Do we need to purchase a Minecraft account to participate in the MineRL competition?

No Minecraft account is needed for the competition!
If you would like to provide additional data for the dataset, you will need a Minecraft account in order to login to our Minecraft server, however this is optional and data collected is not guaranteed to be included in the competition dataset.
